HOOPP Mobile App Redesign Case Study
Overview
HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) is a vital resource for healthcare workers, providing pension security and tools to plan for retirement. However, their current platform is web-based and not optimized for mobile, making it harder for busy healthcare workers to engage with their pensions on the go.
I designed a mobile app version of HOOPP, prototyped in Figma and coded into my portfolio, with the goal of creating a more accessible, intuitive, and streamlined experience for members.
Problem
Healthcare workers often work long, unpredictable shifts and may not have easy access to a desktop computer. Navigating a non-optimized website on a phone can be frustrating, leading to lower engagement with their pension information and planning tools.
In particular, HOOPP’s retirement calculator is powerful but can feel overwhelming. It requires multiple steps and presents information in a way that may be difficult for users to interpret quickly.
Goals
Mobile Accessibility: Make HOOPP tools available anytime, anywhere.
Simplified Navigation: Reduce friction and cognitive load for users.
Clearer Retirement Calculator: Present pension projections in a way that is easy to understand and experiment with.
Process
Research & Analysis
Reviewed HOOPP’s current website and retirement calculator.
Identified usability pain points: small text, multiple pages to navigate, overly complex input process.
Considered the needs of healthcare workers — quick, simple access during breaks or commutes.
Wireframing & Prototyping
Designed a mobile-first interface in Figma with clear navigation tabs for Pension Overview, Calculator, and Resources.
Focused on quick access to the most important information: contributions, retirement age, and projected income.
Simplified Calculator
Reduced the number of input fields and steps.
Created a real-time results display so users can instantly see the effect of changing variables like retirement age or salary.
Used plain language and simple visuals (e.g., graphs and sliders) to make the results digestible.
Visual Design & Coding
Chose clean typography, soft color contrasts, and touch-friendly buttons to enhance usability.
Developed a coded version and integrated it into my portfolio website for an interactive demo.
